Vale Cru

High Quality Small Batch McLaren Vale Winemakers

Lazy Ballerina

James Hook & Miriam Bourne

Launched in 2004, Lazy Ballerina Wines are made by James Hook, with the help of his wife Miriam Bourne.

In a short space of time they have won Gold Medals, rave reviews and a big reputation.

James is now recognized as one of the most dynamic innovators in the industry.

Production levels are tiny even by boutique wine standards with generally 600-800 dozen made each vintage.

James wrote his first paper on grape growing when he was 15 - a treaty on the grape disease 'Downy Mildew' after which the rest of his life was fixed.

Now in his 30s and a viticulturist by trade, James is one of the ‘go to people’ McLaren Vale wine community through his business DJ’s Growers. James covers all aspects of grape growing whether is it sustainable farming, organics, bio-dynamics, irrigation, grape diseases or new varieties you can ask James his thoughts for an overview of what is happening.

The Lazy Ballerina wine range, named after a type of vineyard trellis, is a natural progression of his grape work.

“I love that I can make a living off what is in my head and the skills I have,” James says.

“I can help other farmers and winemakers, I can make wine, I can have my own cellar door, I can be self employed and provide for my family.

“Like a carpenter who finds wood, builds a chair, sell the chair and can live off of doing that, it is a direct life,” James said.

Wine poet and DRINKSTER, Philip White, says “Each wine he releases has this amazing quiet confidence about it. Get on his list!”
